Década de 1960
O significado de caracteres gráficos que apareciam em diversas obras de Manuel Messias dos Santos permaneceu um mistério por mais de cinquenta anos. No entanto, ao longo do processo de pesquisa para o livro Manuel Messias | do tamanho do Brasil houve a descoberta de um álbum, em formato de brochura, composto por seis xilogravuras, uma delas com a indicação da equivalência desses símbolos com o alfabeto latino. O álbum YUWW (EUNS) possibilitou desvendar essa grafia particular criada por Messias que chama a atenção por seu grau de complexidade e elaboração linguística, ainda mais somando-se ao fato de que o artista, por condições diversas, só conseguiu completar o segundo grau em 1978, aos 33 anos.
Por análise comparativa é possível datar a criação do alfabeto nos últimos anos da década de 1960. Em cada uma das gravuras de YUWW (EUNS), o posicionamento das letras e a organização das frases segue uma lógica própria que parece ter contribuído para que essas mensagens ficassem incompreendidas. Os versos, que lembram o estilo profético de alguns textos bíblicos, falam de uma relação entre o divino, o ser e a Terra como seu local de origem e destino. As figuras que compõem as obras equilibram-se sobre antagonismos. O álbum traz a denúncia de uma verdade essencial e visceral que parece situar a humanidade no hiato entre o Gênesis e o Apocalipse.

The meaning of graphic characters that appeared in several works by Manuel Messias dos Santos remained a mystery for more than fifty years. However, throughout the research process for the book Manuel Messias | Do Tamanho do Brasil, an album was discovered, in the form of a brochure, composed of six woodcuts, one of them indicating the equivalence of these symbols with the Latin alphabet. The album YUWW (EUNS) made it possible to unveil this particular spelling created by Messias that draws attention for its degree of complexity and linguistic elaboration, even more adding to the fact that the artist, due to different conditions, was only able to complete high school in 1978, at age 33.
By means of a comparative analysis, it is possible to date the creation of the alphabet to the last years of the 1960s. In each of the YUWW (EUNS) engravings, the positioning of the letters and the organization of the sentences follows a logic of its own that seems to have contributed to these messages. were misunderstood. The verses, which recall the prophetic style of some biblical texts, speak of a relationship between the divine, the being and the Earth as their place of origin and destiny. The figures that make up the works balance each other on antagonisms. The album brings the denunciation of an essential and visceral truth that seems to place humanity in the hiatus between Genesis and the Apocalypse.
