Anna Bella Geiger estabelece uma ruptura importante em sua produção na década de 1970, a passagem da abstração para uma postura mais crítica em relação à arte e ao contexto social. Nesse novo momento, cria, a partir de um viés conceitual, obras que tecem críticas às contradições brasileiras em um regime de exceção, mas sem perder de vista uma reflexão sobre si mesma, incorporando em sua produção questões sobre identidade, território e pertencimento. Na década de 1980, Anna Bella inclina-se especialmente à pintura, conservando as ideias de seus trabalhos anteriores, porém, reconfigurando-os a partir do fazer pictórico. As características dos mapas, suas texturas, desenhos e informações são memórias de paisagens transpostas para a tela que evocam reflexões sobre centro, margem, fronteira e o sujeito nesses espaços.

Como desdobramento dessas investigações surgem os “Macios”. São obras que evocam uma sensação de imprecisão e maleabilidade que fazem parte das abordagens que Anna Bella desenvolve sobre as noções de limite e contornos. Esses trabalhos vêm apresentando diferenças ao longo das décadas. Nas primeiras obras, fica marcada a forte presença da pintura e de uma estética da contracultura que mescla ares futuristas com as cores vibrantes do pop. Nas obras mais atuais, Anna Bella agrega bordados e colagens que fazem parte de suas pesquisas mais recentes e simbolizam uma livre experimentação da forma e da linha como exercício criativo.

Anna Bella Geiger establishes an important rupture in her production in the 1970s, the passage from abstraction to a more critical posture in relation to art and the social context. In this new moment, from a conceptual point of view, she creates works that criticize Brazilian contradictions in a regime of exception, but without losing sight of a reflection on herself, incorporating questions about identity, territory and belonging in her production. In the 1980s, Anna Bella was especially inclined to painting, conserving the ideas of her previous works, however, reconfiguring them based on pictorial work. The characteristics of the maps, their textures, drawings and information are memories of landscapes transposed to the canvas that evoke reflections on center, margin, border and the subject in these spaces.

As a result of these investigations, the “Macios” appear. These are works that evoke a sensation of imprecision and malleability that are part of the approaches that Anna Bella develops on the notions of limit and contours. These works have shown differences over the decades. In the first works, there is a strong presence of painting and a counterculture aesthetic that mixes futuristic airs with the vibrant colors of pop. In her most recent works, Anna Bella adds embroideries and collages that are part of her most recent research and symbolize a free experimentation of form and line as a creative exercise.
